I just found this nifty blog from my good pals at Urbanatomy: Expo Update. Check out their postings to stay on top of what’s happening at the Shanghai Expo – my adopted hometown’s most talked-about event since the SWFC opened. (OK, OK, that was a reach.)

Welcome 2010: New Year’s Eve in Shanghai Dec 31

If you’re planning to spend New Year’s Eve in Shanghai, you have a choice in things to do. You can give permission to the eventide pass by lacking pomp in any of Shanghai’s fantastic cheap and delicious Chinese restaurants.

If you want a serious meal or party, then it might be a little late to buy your tickets or book your table for tonight. Bund restaurants like M on the Bund all have special events happening but you need to make your reservations or be happy back at that humble establishment mentioned above.

There are several Countdown Parties happening around town. In Xintiandi, around the lake there will be a Countdown event from this evening until midnight. On the Bund there will be fireworks and a party at Chen Yi Square (the promenade is closed off to visitors due to renovations). Xujiahui is having a big concert Countdown party right in front of Grand Gateway along with a short fireworks show. And across the river in Pudong, the Bund Promenade on that side direction be the site of a Countdown Party along through a big lighting and fireworks display at midnight.

Want to celebrate 2010 Chinese style? Go visit any of the temples in Shanghai where they’ll be ringing in the new year.

Free things to do in Shanghai Nov 23

After six years in Shanghai, a city I used to venture was relatively inexpensive, I’m finding costs crawling farther up. Little white stickers are appearing in more and more restaurant menus covering old prices and indicating new ones. As Shanghai becomes more cosmopolitan and developed, so are the prices.

But that shouldn’t get the traveler down. There are still plenty of things to do that don’t cost a fortune. In fact, I’ve put together a little list just for this sake. Take in the free stuff and spend your money on treasure for home and delicious food. But even food doesn’face to face have to break the bank – there are plenty of cheap and yummy eats in Shanghai.

Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe And Shanghai Circus World Jul 05

Considered the best acrobatic troupe in China, the award-winning Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe is a tightly-choreographed marvel of human agility known all over the world. Starting every night at 730pm and continuing on for 2 hours at the Shanghai Theatre Centre, the feats of dexterity and magic performed by these entertainers have amazed and delighted visitors and residents of Shanghai with displays of contortionism, glasses-balancing, juggling, silk rope hanging, unicycling, chair-stacking and plate-spinning. What’s more, international audiences can appreciate the show due to its non-verbal content, letting impressive physical skills leave a mark for every one who attended a performance.

Chinese acrobats got their start during the Han Dynasty more than 2,000 years ago, when the annual harvest celebrations called for special entertainment. Talented farmers and other community members would spend their free time practicing with household items like plates, chairs, and so forth.
