Hotel Spotlight: Ahwahnee, Yosemite Nov 13

The summer months draw 50 percent of Yosemite National Park‘s overnight visitor stays; that stat drops to less than three percent once winter rolls round. Concession lodging in the park, like the classic 123-room Ahwahnee Hotel, sees a corresponding drop in visitor nights, with overnight occupancy dropping to about a third of its summer peak throughout the park. And while the Ahwahnee, considered by many to be the country’s finest national-park lodging, in one of the country’s most beautiful settings, Yosemite Valley, is still relatively well stocked and pricey (rates from as low as $265 per night), the real lure is being versed to enjoy the park in its winter glory without the crowds. Go for a snowshoe trek in the glorious shadow of Half Dome, take the kids snowboarding and cross-country skiing at nearby Badger Pass (all-day adult passes only $42), or just sinuosity up with a good book in front of a roaring fire in the lodge’s Great Lounge, with floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing snow-clad Yosemite Valley.

Find Hotwire Hotel Names Nov 01

As you probably know, for hotel room only reservations, Hotwire like Priceline’s “Name your own price” option does not disclose the name of the hotel where you’ll stay until you pay. You will know its neighborhood, star quality rating, and price, but not its name before you book.

However, you can easily find out typical hotels Hotwire uses in each star quality.

  • If you’re traveling to a city where Hotwire offers packages (hotel + airfare and/or car), Hotwire names hotels and resorts. See:

    Hotwire.com

Choose one of the “build a parcel” options, such “Hotel+car.”

There’sitting no guarantee that you receive one of these hotels or resorts if you book a room only, but you’ll know typical hotels for each neighborhood and star quality that Hotwire is using for your dates of travel.

  • I likewise list many hotels that Hotwire uses and explain exactly what Hotwire’s star quality ratings mean in

    “Hotwire Hotel Names and Ratings”

Check these out.

Maximizing Your Priceline Hotel & Car Bookings Aug 28

You’ve booked a Priceline “Name your own price” hotel room and car rental. Hopefully, you’ve paid a lot less than others for these. But, does that leave you vulnerable to whatever comes?

Well, yes and no.

At the rent-roll car counter

If you’ve reserved a car or better hotel, I urge you to present its frequent traveler card or at least its number.

With the rental car, you probably won’t get points or the ability to bypass the counter, goal you may tolerate special service with the card.

For example for a recent “Name your own price” Priceline Hertz reservation, the operator appreciated being able to use my Hertz #1 Club Gold number to pull up easily my credit card and other personal information. He then assigned me a vehicle in the #1 Club lot that was nearly new.

At hotel check in

You may find the same with hotels. You may not be upgraded from the support room you normally receive with a “Name your own price” or Hotwire reservation, but you are unlikely to receive an inferior room last on the list to be renovated.

In addition, the guest clerk will probably try to do more to fulfill any special requests you may have.
