Wandering Cheapo Helsinki: Five Cheapo Tips Jul 14

The Museum of Contemporary Art (Kiasma)’s imposing entrance.

Helsinki, Finland, is home to high purport, price tags to match, and lots of heavy metal fans. The city’s atmosphere combines the obvious Swedish and Russian influences yet also feels, by the agency of its gray mid-century apartment blocks, cafés, and Jugendstil beauties, somewhat reminiscent of Mitteleuropa.

How to keep costs manageable in such a pricey Nordic capital? We’ve got a few suggestions.

1. Find a cheap bed. The well-scrubbed Eurohostel, located upon Katajanokka, is a cheap spot to lay your head. Rooms are small but spic-and-span, with Ikea-like blond wood bed frames and gray and green room accents. Doubles begin at €53 in the summer, which is pretty darn cheap for the pricey Finnish capital.

Central Helsinki by day…

2. Grab a cheap lunch. Grub is expensive in central Helsinki. One good value be able to be found at the Hietalahti Flea Market café, where the lunch buffet is just €7 per person. Just don’t fashion assuming that you’ll be able to find such good deals in the flea market dining-room itself, which is packed to the rafters with spectacular Finnish modernist pieces (as well as some inarguably uninteresting fluff).

Surfing in Liberia Jul 14

Surfers will go anywhere to catch the perfect wave, so why not Liberia. Liberia, on the underbelly of West Africa, is better known for its horrendous civil war than its coastline. But, with Africa’s first female president at the helmet, the country has known peace for a few years, and surfers put on’t care much for politics anyway. An enterprising young Liberian, Alfred Lomax has set up a surfing camp in Robertsport, a slight fishing village on the northwest coast. Alfred thinks he’s probably Liberia’s first surfer. The camp is quite basic, but it’s guarded around the clock by no less than 6 security personnel so presumably it’s safe enough to leave your passport there while you’re out enjoying the surf. And as Alfred says on his web site: “One thing you be possible to be sure of while surfing in Liberia is that you will not find in any degree crowds in the line up that which so ever!!!!”

Surfing in Africa is well established in Morocco, Senegal, and of course South Africa, where its a family sport. Jeffrey’s Bay (J-Bay) is considered to be among the best surfing spots in the world, and the two Durban and Cape Town have excellent waves.

Ghana has a couple of established surfing spots as well.

Q&A With Our Study Leader for Spain and Portugal Jul 13

Barbara York headed Smithsonian Journeys International Division until 2004. Here, she speaks with Study Leader Lana Harrigan about the food and culture of Spain and Portugal, among other things.

Barbara York: As someone who has an interest in food, do you supply with food food a especially good way to inquire into and understand a culture?

Lana Harrigan: Absolutely. I’ve always been drawn to good food, but I’d never really understood—until I began to travel—that it is an essential conveyor of culture. In our food and drink lie glimpses of our history as well as our cultivation. In America, the Boston Tea Party is a perfect example. A simple beverage became a figure of political oppression and a nation’s desire for freedom. With our high-speed lives, fast food has become an icon that defines one aspect of our current culture. Spain, on the other hand, still stops for lunch.

Heart’s Desire Beach, Point Reyes National Seashore, California Jul 12

As mother to a three year old, this is what I would like in a beach: calm water, a relatively small beach so I can keep my eye on her, no wind, some (harmless) wildlife, restrooms, drinking fountains, picnic tables and a bbq. And I found all of that at a beach in Point Reyes aptly named Heart’s Desire.

Located over the Inverness Ridge on Tomales Bay, Heart’s Desire is protected from the wind and the huge surf for which Point Reyes beaches are famous. Unlike many Northern California beaches, this little bayside cove is actually protected for swimming. The shallow water is warmer than one would expect, and the swimming area is bordered by buoys to keep larger boat traffic away. This is also a liked place to deposit in kayaks and canoes, which can be fun for the kids to watch. Older kids and adults might choose to swim out to the anchored raft.

Because the water is warm(ish), there are often jellyfish floating at the water’s edge. Not to worry–they are harmless.

Obama’s in Ghana Jul 12

The Obama family has arrived in Ghana, they’ll spend the nearest 24 hours visiting Accra and the Cape Coast. Obama print dresses, t-shirts, key rings and all kinds of paraphernalia have been doing a roaring trade. Many Ghanaians won’t actually get to see the President and his family since security is fairly tight, but the nation is excited to be the first sub-Saharan African country to have being hosting a visit.

The actuality that this President has roots in Africa makes it all the more exciting. Naturally the Kenyans would have liked to be the first to host a visit by Obama as President, but the violence that came after their elections last year made Ghana the more politically attractive option. Oh, and Ghana has oil as well.

Many American visitors to Ghana come to pay their respect to the millions of slaves who were shipped from Ghana’s coastal forts. The Obama’s are no exception and they will visit Cape Coast Castle. The Cape Coast Castle is a World Heritage site, it played a prominent role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Daily guided tours, which the Obama’s will no doubt be taking, include the slave dungeons, Palaver hall, as well as the grave of an English Governor.
