Visiting Australia Feb 24

When it comes to special trips away it can be quite difficult to decide where to go. A lot of people often choose a small island to whisk their love one off to, and some people prefer to visit a well known city in America, but if you want to treat someone to a really special holiday, then you should choose Australia.

The great thing about Australia is that there are so many different places you can visit. One side of the country is so different from the other, and you can go from so many different extremes whilst you are in the country. It is wonderful to be able to explore the outback as well as visit the impressive cities of Brisbane and Sydney.

The amount of the country you see is obviously down to how much time you have to spare, but if you can afford to take three or four weeks then there is so much to see. If you don’t have such a luxury however it is often best to base yourself in one of the large cities and try to get out of the city limits every few days.

Flying out to Australia can be quite expensive but if you find the right company then there are still cheap deals available out there. Read more…

Shaun White’s gold in the men’s halfpipe and Lindsey Vonn’s gold in the women’s downhill were worth all the nervous delays caused by British Columbia’s fickle coastal weather. Add Bode Miller’s bronze medal in the men’s downhill (he was .09 seconds off the winning time) and you’ve got something to write home about. And let’s not forget American women Hannah Teter and Kelly Clark, who took silver and bronze in the women’s halfpipe.

And there are likely more medals to come from the U.S. Ski and Snowboarding Team. Watch for Ted Ligety in the giant slalom and slalom next week.

White, 23, pulled off his new trick, Double McTwist 1260, a two-flip, three-and-a-half-spin surprise that he perfected on a remote halfpipe in Colorado, built by his sponsor Red Bull. Vonn, 25, did the sort of she’s been doing all winter. She beat the fastest women in the world for the most daring and dramatic gold medal of the games, so far. Her American roommate, Julia Mancuso, who in show skied a perfect run, won silver. Read more…

Booking a Flight the Frugal Way Feb 16

Joshua Lott/Reuters An airplane departs Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix.

It used to be so simple. You wanted to go to Paris, so you called a travel agency, gave them your dates and bag, and with any luck, you soon had in your hands a real paper ticket through a real dollar value. Even in the at the opening of lifetime days of the Internet, it was easier. You went to one of the few booking sites — Travelocity or Expedia, most likely — searched for your route, paid with a credit card and that was it. Maybe you even got a paper ticket in the mail. Those were the days!

Today, however, booking a flight is a total mess. Travelocity and Expedia have been joined by Bing and Orbitz and Dohop and Vayama and CheapTickets and CheapOair and Kayak and SideStep and Mobissimo and and and … I could go on and list every single Web site out there, but I won’t. There are just too many. Instead, I’ll lead you through the steps I make when I’m booking a flight myself.

I’ve covered this territory a bit before — here and here — but today I’ll try to go into more detail.

Pack A Picnic For Your Next Plane Ride Feb 16

The advent of low-cost, no-frill airlines has seen the demise of many an unappetising inflight meal. While most passengers are happy to go without food on a short-haul flight, some people’session bellies do start complaining on longer flights. It’s not a great idea to starve yourself during a longer journey, so you’ll probably need to eat at some point. However, instead of opting for the unhealthy snacks many airlines offer, for what cause not pack your own healthy and delicious inflight meal instead? Here are some important points to keep in mind when packing your inflight picnic.

See-through containers -
Pack your food in transparent plastic containers – like the kind you get from takeaways – so it’s much easier for security staff to see what you’ve brought with you. This way, you won’confidentially need to spend much time opening up all the containers, then repacking them into your bags again.

No liquids – Bring an empty water-bottle with you, and fill it up once you’ve passed the security checkpoints, to save the hassle and expense of having to throw away a full bottle, and then buying a new some.
